In Italian Classica, Vittoria Trupiano of Mangia e Bevi qualified
after placing 5th overall. Mike Tholen of Mangia e Bevi placed 9th overall; he is a friend of the U.S. Pizza Team who has toured with the group before and also represents Mangia e Bevi, the shop owned by team captain Tore Trupiano.
In Traditional, Rio Lunardi of Slice on Broadway & Lucatino finished 8th overall, while Jon Garland of Saccone’s Pizza placed 9th overall. In the Traditional Regionals, Garland added a 3rd-place finish in the Southwest, Sean Dempsey of Dempsey’s Brewery Pub & Restaurant took 2nd in the Northwest, Lunardi placed 3rd in the Northeast, and Giovanni Labbate of Tievoli Pizza Bar captured 1st place in the Midwest.
The team also made its presence felt in Best Cheese Slice Regionals, where Mike Pitera of Pizza a Modo Mio finished 3rd in the Southeast and Giovanni Labbate placed 2nd in the Midwest.
In Legacy Non-Traditional, Sean Dempsey earned a 3rd-place overall finish and advanced to the Finals. In the International Italian Sandwich Competition, Giovanni Labbate
placed 3rd overall and qualified for the Finals, while Jimmy Terwilliger of Pizza Cassette finished 8th overall.
A special Bacio event also took place during the competition. At least one USPT-connected competitor, David Solum of Danger von Dempsey’s ATX, took part, though scores from that event were not yet available at the time of writing.
These results are to the best of our knowledge and may be updated with corrections or additions. A fuller photo gallery will follow, with special attention given to the winning creations. As always, covering an event of this size means it’s impossible to be everywhere at once.
If you want, I can also do a slightly sharper PMQ-style version that reads more like a published news item and less like an event recap.
