Pizzaioli gather in Toms River to prove that simplicity still rules the slice
New Jersey doesn’t just eat pizza, it defines it. That’s why the NJ Pizza Jam has quickly become a must-attend event for pizzerias and industry insiders.
Now in its second year, the competition, taking place on September 16, brings together some of the Garden State’s most passionate pizza makers for a one-day showdown over who can claim the title of best plain pie. Hosted by influencer Anthony Pizzi in Toms River and backed by 24/7 Restaurant Equipment, the event combines serious competition with camaraderie, tastings, networking and a little celebration on the side.
To get the inside scoop, I caught up with Jeanette Catena, business development manager at 24/7 Restaurant Equipment, who has been instrumental in shaping the Pizza Jam experience.
Brian Hernandez: The NJ Pizza Jam is all about proving who makes the best plain pie in the state. Why was it important to keep the competition focused on classic cheese pizza?
Jeanette Catena: We’re excited to include a friendly competition for the best cheese pizza in New Jersey at our 2nd annual Pizza Jam! We want to ensure it’s a fair and even playing field for everyone because there are so many different styles of pizza celebrated in N.J. While pizzaioli naturally want to showcase their talent, and we love that about our pizzaioli friends, we want to be sure everyone has fun and follows simple guidelines.
Hernandez: With only 20 spots available, competition is tight. What kind of pizzerias are you hoping to attract, and what does being selected mean for those operators?
Catena: We’re reaching out to connect with the most passionate pizzerias and those chefs who are eager to share their knowledge and experiences within a vibrant community. We hope to foster an environment where operators can feel a strong sense of pride and belonging.
Hernandez: The prize package includes cash, gear and even a spot at the International Pizza Challenge in Las Vegas. How do you see this event opening doors for local winners on a national stage?
Catena: We believe that individuals who dedicate themselves to their craft throughout the year should have the opportunity to compete nationally, including against the most renowned pizzaioli.
Beyond the Competition
It may sting a little that the NJ Pizza Jam is industry-only, leaving the general public on the sidelines for now, but organizers have hinted that future editions may open the doors wider. In the meantime, the event offers much more than bragging rights for those inside. Attendees can expect vendor showcases, Broaster Chicken tastings, gear giveaways, and both Judge’s Choice and People’s Choice awards. The invite-only format creates what Catena describes as a collaborative jam session, where operators and vendors can learn, connect and celebrate the craft. But have no fear: The contest itself is still the spark that ignites the day.
Hernandez: The event is industry and invite-only. Why was that approach chosen, and how do you see it shaping the vibe compared to a public festival?
Catena: Our aim is to create a collaborative atmosphere, much like musicians jamming together. We love seeing our industry friends connect and enjoy the business in this setting. While we might open to the public next year, for now we are focusing on fostering these valuable industry connections.
Hernandez: Beyond the competition, the flyer highlights vendor networking, tastings and people’s choice awards. What kind of experience do you want attendees to walk away with?
Catena: I am a big proponent for learning and keeping up with industry trends. Pizzaioli often work long hours and may not have the opportunity to attend trade shows. With this in mind, we’re bringing the newest and most innovative products directly to them here in New Jersey.
Hernandez: Pizza competitions can be intense, but this one also promises fun, like Broaster Chicken tastings and gear giveaways. How important is it to balance serious competition with a little bit of celebration?
Catena: In the daily grind of running a business, it’s rare to find a moment to pause and appreciate the hard work we put in. I believe it’s important for us in the pizzeria community to come together, relax and acknowledge the passion and dedication that drives us to serve.
Closing Slice
The NJ Pizza Jam is proof that sometimes the simplest pies spark the fiercest rivalries. By keeping the focus on plain cheese pizza, the event levels the playing field and shines a light on fundamentals. Add in prizes, networking and a chance to advance to Las Vegas, and it’s no wonder the Pizza Jam has become a fast-rising tradition in New Jersey’s pizza landscape.
